Robert Sinclair Scott, founder of Scott Laboratories in California and Canada, died June 20 in Mann County. He was 80. Robert Scott was born in Alaska, moved to Los Angeles at age three, and subsequently was graduated with honors from the University of California at Los Angeles, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year.
Bob Scott served in the Navy during World War II and helped get his ship, the USS Blue, out of Pearl Harbor during the Dec. 7 attack. He became a pilot and returned to the Pacific theater in 1944; his decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He retired in 1947 as a commander.
Robert Scott purchased the Berkeley Yeast Laboratory, a supplier of goods and services to the wine industry, in 1963. He moved the business to Richmond, Calif., and renamed it Scott Laboratories, the name it bears today. In 1998,
Bob Scott endowed a chair in enology at UC Davis in memory of his late son, Stephen. He also endowed a perpetual scholarship in enology at Fresno State. He was a leader in both his community and the wine industry.
Robert Scott is survived by his widow, sons Robert and Bruce, daughter Jane and five grandsons.
A memorial service was held July 1 in Mill Valley; the family suggested memorial contributions be made to the Mill Valley Community Church, of which he was a member for more than 50 years, at 8 Olive, Mill Valley, Calif. 94941 or the Ralston O. White Retreat, #2 El Capitan, Mill Valley, Calif. 94941.
